Puppy Love

While I’m not birthing a human like my sister did in March, I am becoming a puppy mom next month! While I grew up with schnauzers in my house, I’ve always thought corgis were cute. Plus, the word “corgi” is fun to say. My love was solidified when I saw this November 2011 cover of Entertainment Weekly. How adorable is that corgi?!

I had no idea where to get an amazing looking creature like that but I knew someday I would have one. Luckily, my friend Rachel got a corgi in January 2012 and I stalked checked out her Facebook photos and decided to get on a waiting list with her breeder right away.

My Pembroke welsh corgi is a male and, after an exhaustive search and narrowing down a list that contained 30+ names, I decided to name him “Bennie.” Why? After Bennie and the Jets? Or Benny the Jet Rodriguez in the Sandlot? Because it sounds cute? Whatever works for you.

Maybe my corgi can become an outstanding baseball player and support me some day

I am slowly becoming the “corgi woman.” People fill me in when they see one around town. People email me links to videos and corgi memes. Corgis made a huge splash during the Olympics opening ceremony and I got five texts telling me about it. I’m fully embracing this new role.

I know raising a puppy is going to be hard. Bennie will pee and bark and chew up my favorite shoes. I will pour money into his vet bills, food, doggy daycare and squeaky toys. It’s going to suck having dog hair all over everything. But, I dare you to Google “corgi” and not say “awww” at least once. And I get to live with one!
